SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State scored the first 12 points of the game and cruised to a 69-52 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) at Tiger Arena.
SSU held the Jaguars scoreless until the 16:22 mark when Janna Eichelberger made a layup.
IUPUI scored five straight points to cut their deficit to 12-5 but the Lady Tigers answered with a 8-1 spurt to increase their advantage to 20-6 with 9:34 on the clock.
The Jaguars trailed 24-14 with six minutes remaining but SSU finished the half with a 13-4 run and went into intermission with a 37-18 cushion.
Savannah State shot 58.3 percent from the field in the opening period
IUPUI started the second twenty minutes with a 7-0 run to pull within 37-25 but then found themselves down by 20 with 8:56 remaining as the Lady Tigers strung together a 15-7 run.
A 3-pointer by Darice Fountiane with 5:50 on the clock gave SSU its biggest lead of the contest at 59-36.
The Jaguars were able to get within 15 on three occasions within the last four minutes but could not get any closer.
Courtney Long led SSU (6-7) with a game-high 18 points. She also had seven assists, six rebounds and five steals. Fountaine added 11 points and five assists while
Brittany Cade made 5 of 6 shots from the floor and chipped in 10 points.
Shea Collins and Jasmine Horne each had 11 points for IUPUI (3-8).
Both teams had 24 turnovers and SSU edged the Jaguars on the boards 34 to 33.
Savannah State finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the floor.
