ATLANTA, Ga.- Savannah State had a better shooting percentage from the field and from the free throw line but in the end it was all Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets rolled to a 80-51 win over SSU in Alexander Memorial Coliseum before a crowd of 611.
Savannah State shot 43.9 percent from the field while Tech shot 34.9 percent. SSU was 11 for 15 (73.3%) from the free throw line while the Yellow Jackets were 32 of 44 (72.7%). Both teams were 4 of 12 from 3-point range.
The first half was close with three ties and no team led by more than seven points.
With the score tied at 12, Tech scored seven unanswered points to go ahead 19-12 with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
SSU battled back with a 3-pointer from
Crissa Jackson and a layup from
Treasure Monroe to trim their deficit to two.
After a Tech free throw, Savannah State used back to back three pointers from Jackson and Monroe to go ahead 23-20 with 3:26 remaining.
Georgia Tech pulled within one but Kym Stamps buried a 3-pointer for SSU to extend their lead to 26-22 with 2:44 left.
Tech ended the half with a 8-0 run to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
The 22nd ranked Yellow Jackets started the second period with a 14-6 run for a 44-32 lead.
Tech followed that with a 24-9 spurt for a 78-43 advantage with 3:46 on the clock.
Savannah State, which lost their 11th straight game, out-scored Tech 8-2 the rest of the way.
Courtney Long led SSU (8-15) with a game high 15 points. Jackson added 13 points and four assists. Long also had seven rebounds.
Brigitte Ardossi had 12 points and 8 rebounds for Tech (16-4).
SSU made 34 turnovers and was out-rebounded 40 to 29.
