SSU Wins Four Events At 2009 EyeOpener

Eyeopener Results

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State opened their 2009 outdoor season by winning four events at the SSU EyeOpener Track & Field Meet held at T. A. wright Stadium on the SSU campus.

Savannah State won one running event and three field events.

Amara Jones captured the women's 400m race with a time of 57.27 Sharonda Redfield won the women's triple jump and Chris Blount won the men's triple jump. Redfield had a leap of 38-06.00 whole Blount had a jump of 50-01.00. Tyrone McCoy won the men's 800m race with a time of 1:58.05.

SSU finished in the top ten in 17 men events and 11 women events.

Mekela Martin (1:00.99) was 9th in the women's 400m while Kandice Smith was 23rd in the 800m and 20th in the 1500m races. Smith had times of 3:02.96 in the 800m and 6:20.78 in the 1500m race.

Victoria Burch (15.95) finished 7th in the 100m hurdles while Monique Harrison (16.81) was 9th. In the 400m hurdles, Burch (1:07.30) was 4th and Harrison (1:10.68) was 7th.

The 4x100m relay team of Harrison, Jones, Martin and Amber Hughes placed 4th with a time of 48.59.

Redfield (17.01.25) was 4th in the triple jump and Hughes (16.08.50) was 6th. Hughes was 3rd in the triple jump with a leap of 36.06.50. Ebony Griggs was 13th in the shot put with a throw of 31.10.25.

For the SSU men, Eric Plump (11.32) and Richard Rucker (11.47) were 6th and 7th in the 100m race while Jonathan Loadholt (11.51) was 10th, Charles Huggins (11.60) was 12th and Darrell McElroy (11.61) was 13th. In the 400m race, Vernon Williams (50.46) placed 5th while Joseph Ferguson (58.88) was 25th.

Gabriel Davis (2:02.25) finished 4th in the 800m race and Ruben Isreal-McBee (2:02.30) was right behind in 5th place. McCoy (4:14.16) was 5th in the 1500m race, Isreal-McBee (4:24.48) was 14th and Davis (4:30.22) was 19th.

Aaron Whitaker (15.42) was 2nd in the 110m hurdles, Marcus Stallworth (15.50) placed 4th and Brandon Norman (15.87) was 6th. Whitaker placed 6th in the 400m hurdles with a run of 1:00.74.

The SSU "B" 4x100m relay team of Norman, Whitaker, Huggins and Loadholt placed 6th with a time of 43.39 while SSU's "C" squad of Blount, Jamario Parks, McElroy and Shawn Sovnenir was 7th with a time of 43.88.

Sovnenir was second in the long jump and triple jump with jumps of 21-05 and 45-00.50 respectively.

Other participating schools were South Carolina State, Walsh, Benedict, Edward Waters, Lipscomb, West Virginia Wesleyan, Concordia, USC-Pembroke, Voorhees and Mercer.
