SAVANNAH, Ga.- Valentine's Day was a sweet one for the Savannah State softball team as they defeated Edward Waters 11-3 and Clark Atlanta 5-3 at the Paulson Softball Complex.
The victories give Savannah State a 3-5 record on the season.
SSU jumped on Edward Waters for four runs in the bottom of the first inning as
Tiffany Taylor hit a RBI triple and later scored a run. EWC made three errors in the inning.
EWC left the base-pads loaded but was only able to score twice in the top of the second but the Lady Tigers scored two runs off one hit as they increased their lead to 6-2.
Edward Waters added a run in the top of the third but SSU answered in the bottom of the fourth as five base runners crossed the plate.
A double by Taylor drove in two runs and
Krystle Frost hit a single that drove in a pair of runs.
Brittany Wilson also had a RBI single.
SSU had nine hits in the game while Edward Waters made six errors and stranded six base-runners.
Jessica Weimerskirk, Taylor and Wilson each had two hits for SSU. Weimerskirk scored three times while Taylor drove in three runs. Frost earned the win, throwing a five-hitter.
Against CAU, Taylor and
Brittney Lollis each scored twice and
Brittany Wilson drove in two runs.
The teams combined for 17 hits and stranded 19 runners on base. SSU had 11 hits and left nine runners on base.
CAU left the bases loaded in the first inning but came up empty but the Panthers scored three times in the third for a 3-0 lead.
SSU got within one in the fourth getting two runs off four hits as Wilson and
Diamyn Woods each had RBI singles.
Clark Atlanta (1-6) had the bases loaded in the fourth but could not score.
In the fifth, the Lady Tigers tied the score when Taylor hit a singles that drove home Lollis who earlier singled. Savannah State went ahead 4-3 Wilson singled to left which brought home Taylor.
SSU left the bases juiced in the sixth but was able to bring one runner home.
Jasmine Brown reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an error by the second baseman to make the score 5-3.
Rachel West picked up the win for Savannah State, giving up six hits, three runs and three walks. She also struck out three batters.
Synne Baker had two hits for the Panthers. Ashley Brooks took the loss, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs.
