SAVANNAH, Ga.- Norfolk State held Savannah State scoreless the final 5:29 as the Spartans defeated SSU 57-45 in Tiger Arena.
After shooting 44.4 percent from the floor in the first half, Savannah State went cold in the second period making only 8-of-26 shots from the field.
A three-point play by
Darice Fountaine gave SSU a 37-36 lead with 15:46 remaining in the game but Norfolk State rallied to take a 45-39 advantage with 10:28 left.
Fountaine, who finished the game with 10 points and seven rebounds, made a layup with 5:29 left to cut SSU's deficit to 47-45.
Norfolk State scored the last 10 points of the contest while the Lady Tigers made six turnovers and missed six shots and two free throw attempts.
Courtney Long added eight points and five steals for SSU (7-4) while
Alisha Nelson and
Raven James grabbed eight rebounds each.
Savannah State made 25 turnovers.
In the first half, SSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Norfolk State responded with a 11-3 run to go ahead by seven.
Savannah State tied the game at 20 before the Spartans (2-5) scored five unanswered points with just under six minutes left.
SSU led 28-27 with 3:35 remaining but the Spartans led 31-28 at the half.
NSU, who shot 40.5 percent from the floor, was led by Whitney Long's 30 points.
