DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State held North Carolina Central without a field goal the final five minutes, nine seconds but it would not be enough as the Lady Tigers fell 52-40 in McLendon-McDougald Gym.
It would be the seventh straight loss for the SSU women as they fell to 3-16. No Lady Tiger player scored in double figures as they were led by Milan Johnson and Crissa Jackson who scored eight points apiece.
Jori Nwachukwu led NCCU (8-13) with a game-high 19 points while Blaire Houston added 18.
Both teams got off to a rocky start as they combined for 10 points after 10 minutes of action.
Leading 6-4 with 9:08 left in the half, the Eagles went on a 11-0 run to go ahead 17-4 with just over five minutes remaining before half time.
A pair of field goals by Raven Fields pulled SSU within nine but Central finished the period with six unanswered points to take a 23-8 advantage into the half.
SSU shot 18.8 percent from the floor and made 25 turnovers in the first half.
Central's lead would reach 17 in the early stages of the second period. Savannah State would get as close as 13 but the Eagles would open up a 20 point advantage with 6:23 left.
Trailing by 20 with just over five minutes remaining, SSU closed out the contest with a 15-7 spurt.
Savannah State shot 40.7 percent from the floor in the second half while holding NCCU to go 9-for-25.
Central was 14-of-22 from the free throw line while SSU made all 10 of their shots.
The Eagles won the rebounding battle 37 to 27.
The teams combined for 65 turnovers, with SSU making 35.
