New Jersey Tech Rallies Past Lady Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga.- New Jersey Tech ended the game with a 14-5 run as the Highlanders overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half in a 65-56 win over Savannah State in Tiger Arena.

Kehinde Oyelola came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points while teammates Jessica Gerald and Jill Dickinson added 12 points each for NJIT (3-11).

Savannah State, who fell to 3-12, was led by Raven Fields and Lashara Smith who scored 12 points apiece.

The crowd of 371 saw the Lady Tigers shoot 56.5 percent from the field in the opening period but was just 9-of-25 from the floor in the second half. NJIT shot 42.1 percent from the floor for the game.

SSU opened the game with a 11-2 surge and led 21-11 after two free throws from Fields with 8:17 remaining.

The Highlanders chipped away at their deficit with 3-pointers and closed the gap to 32-29 with 13 seconds left but Savannah State's Ashlee Barley made a layup with three seconds remaining to send the Lady Tigers into the half with a 34-29 advantage.

Savannah State pushed their lead to 39-32 early in the second half but NJIT scored six straight points as apart of a 14-5 surge as they took a 47-43 lead with 9:33 left.

The Lady Tigers clawed back to tie the score at 49 with 7:12 remaining and for the final time at 15 with 6:33 on the clock.

NJIT broke the tie with a 6-0 run but Savannah State stayed as close as three points until a back-breaking 3-pointer by Kehinde's twin sister Taiwo with 3:55 left to give the visitors a 60-54 advantage.

The contest was sloppy as the teams combined for 50 turnovers. SSU made 28 while the Highlanders committed 22.

SSU edged New Jersey Tech in rebounds 37 to 36.
