Tigers Enter Final Week Of Spring Football

SAVANNAH, Ga.- With three practices last week, the Savannah State football team enters their final week of spring drills. SSU is expected to practice Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and have the annual Orange & Blue Spring Game on Saturday, April 18 at 1:00 p.m.

Temperatures were in the 50s last Tuesday but warmed up to the upper 70s on Thursday and Friday. The SSU scrimmage scheduled for April 11 was moved up a day because of the Easter holiday weekend.

When asked about how the difference in temperature affects the team, head coach Robby Wells stated "the weather on Tuesday effected our offensive timing. The offense did a better job on Friday. We have got to get better on both sides of the line of scrimmage if we want to compete."

Wells turned 41 on Friday but did little celebrating as the Tigers had their second scrimmage of the spring.

"The scrimmage went well. We experimented with some things and took a look at some kids in different positions," said Wells. "The overall attitude of the team is real good. The kids are hustling to the football and the temp is good."

When asked what he did on his birthday, Wells said "I didn't do anything special but I'm getting together with my family on Easter. I'm thankful for a lot of things."

One of those experiments was moving offensive lineman Donnell Collins to fullback. "He looked good and I think he may of found a new home in the backfield," said Wells of the 6-0, 266 rising sophomore.

The Tigers continue to work on special teams throughout the spring. "We work on punting everyday," said Wells. "Derek Williams is our punter and place-kicker but A.J. DeFilippis has been punting extremely well."

With the annual Orange & Blue game this weekend, the coach is looking forward to seeing many faces. "It should be a good crowd. I'm looking forward to seeing alumni, fans, the student body and the entire community on campus. I'm looking for a good turnout."
