LANCASTER, S.C. — Savannah State men's golf saved its best golf for the final round of the Wolves Fall Intercollegiate on Tuesday, as Justin Woods fired a 6-under round to finish tied atop the individual leaderboard and the Tigers closed the tournament with a 1-over team score at Edgewater Golf Course.

Savannah State finished eighth overall at 45-over for the 54-hole tournament, but the final round provided a strong finish for the Tigers. SSU improved by 25 strokes from its second-round score, following rounds of 18-over and 26-over with a 1-over performance Tuesday.

Woods led the charge with the lowest final-round score in the field.

After opening the tournament with a 5-under round and following with a 2-over score in the second round, Woods caught fire Tuesday. His 6-under closing round moved him two spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for first at 9-under for the tournament.

Woods shared the top spot with Chowan's Gabriel Ansley, who posted rounds of 1-under, 5-under and 3-under to also finish at 9-under.

Mount Olive's Oscar Lönnqvist finished one stroke behind the leaders at 8-under, while Lenoir-Rhyne's Flynn Lewis placed fourth at 4-under. Newberry's Fredrik Gannon and Lenoir-Rhyne's Nicklaus Newton tied for fifth at 3-under.

Woods wasn't the only Tiger to turn in his best round of the tournament Tuesday.

Quentin Brooks bounced back from rounds of 7-over and 9-over to shoot 1-under in the final round. Brooks finished tied for 34th at 15-over.

Gauge Simmons also steadily improved throughout the tournament. After opening at 12-over, Simmons shot 6-over in the second round and closed with a 3-over performance Tuesday to finish tied for 39th at 21-over.

Lavelle Teague Jr. joined Simmons at 21-over and tied for 39th after recording rounds of 4-over, 12-over and 5-over.

Nicholas Flowers posted rounds of 17-over and 9-over during the first two rounds but did not record a final-round score.

Lenoir-Rhyne captured the team title at 12-under, finishing 20 strokes ahead of runner-up Newberry's A team at 8-over. Mount Olive finished third at 11-over, followed by Fayetteville State at 16-over and Chowan at 23-over. Morehouse (+41), Newberry's B team (+42), Savannah State (+45) and Livingstone (+90) rounded out the team standings.

For Savannah State, the final round represented a dramatic turnaround from Monday. The Tigers' 1-over team score was their best round of the tournament by 17 strokes and marked a 25-stroke improvement from the second round.
