SUWANEE, Ga. – Savannah State men's golf opened the fall portion of its 2026-27 schedule with a seventh-place finish at the Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. HBCU Collegiate Golf Classic at Bear's Best Golf Course.
The Tigers posted a team score of 326, finishing 38-over par on the par-72, 6,765-yard layout. Savannah State finished ahead of Fisk in the eight-team Division II field.
Lavelle Teague, Jr. paced Savannah State in the season-opening event, firing a six-over-par 78 to finish tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard.
Teague turned in the Tigers' best round of the tournament and finished six shots behind the group of players who tied for fifth at even par.
Quentin Brooks was right behind Teague, carding a seven-over-par 79 to finish tied for 22nd overall. Brooks and Teague were two of 29 players in the field to break 80.
Justin Woods was Savannah State's third finisher, shooting a nine-over-par 81 to place 30th.
Freshman Gauge Tailor-Simmons made his collegiate debut for the Tigers and finished with an 88 (+16), placing 34th overall. Senior Nicholas Flowers rounded out Savannah State's lineup with a 96 (+24).
LeMoyne-Owen and Winston-Salem State shared the top spot in the team standings after both programs finished at 296 (+8). Virginia Union was two strokes back at 298 (+10), followed by Morehouse at 305 (+17), Central State at 308 (+20) and Johnson C. Smith at 316 (+28).
Morehouse's J. D. Cunningham captured the top spot on the individual leaderboard after shooting a three-under-par 69. Virginia Union's Joseph Boone and Johnson C. Smith's D'Yanni Rhyne tied for second at two-under-par 70, while Central State's T. Keyworth finished fourth with a one-under 71.
Savannah State will next tee-off at the Newberry College Wolves Fall Intercollegiate, Monday, September 28-Tuesday, September 29th in Lancaster, South Carolina.
