MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Savannah State men's cross country turned in three top-seven individual finishes as the Tigers placed fifth overall Friday at the Brewton-Parker Invitational.
Savannah State finished the meet with 94 points, trailing host Brewton-Parker, Georgia Gwinnett, Edward Waters and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in the seven-team field. Brewton-Parker won the team championship with 41 points.
Sophomore Braylin Grier led an impressive effort at the front of the pack for Savannah State, completing the 7.7-kilometer course in 26:06.6 to finish third overall and second among attached collegiate runners.
Grier was followed closely by teammates Gabriel Hinkins and Jaden-Wayne McPherson, giving Savannah State three runners among the first seven competitors to cross the finish line.
Hinkins placed sixth overall with a time of 26:41.3, while McPherson finished seventh in 26:54.1. The trio finished within 48 seconds of one another.
The performance marked a strong improvement at the front of the lineup from Savannah State's season-opening Willie Laster Invitational. McPherson had led the Tigers in Albany with a 10th-place finish, followed by Grier in 14th and Hinkins in 20th. Savannah State finished fourth as a team in its season opener.
Cameron Frails was the fourth Tiger across the finish line Friday, placing 51st overall in 36:40.9. Tayshuan Williams followed in 53rd place with a time of 36:47.4 to complete Savannah State's five scoring positions.
Freshman Marcelle Oliver Jr. rounded out the Savannah State contingent, finishing 59th overall in 40:04.9.
Savannah State's five scoring runners combined for a time of 2:33:10, with the Tigers averaging 30:38 on the course.

Savannah State will next return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the USCB Sand Shark Invitational in Bluffton, S.C.
