SAVANNAH, Ga. – The highly touted Savannah State baseball team returns to action this week with a three-game series against Lane College to open their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule.

The Tigers started the season ranked in two polls—No. 10 in the NCBWA South Region Poll and No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Media Poll—and boasted nine selections on the 2023 SIAC Preseason Team.

Savannah State took a week off from their last series, against Bluefield State, due to weather issues, and have added several new games to this year's schedule to make up for the lost games. The Tigers will host the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Feb. 21, Voorhees College on March 14, and Barton College on April 18.

LAST GAME
Ranked Savannah State baseball opened the 2023 schedule this past weekend with a three-game series against Virginia State. The Tigers took two games in the series, racking up a combined 32 runs—winning game one 12-0 and game three 20-0—in two routs of the Trojans. They lost the middle game, 12-4. (READ MORE HERE)

PLAYER OUTLOOK
After the opening series of the season, it's clear the Tiger's pitching staff is going to give everyone trouble this year. The holy trinity of starting pitchers, Jared Showalter (1-0), Enrico Peele (1-0), and Jose Santiago (0-1) combined for 16 strikeouts and only three earned runs last week.

At the plate, SSU saw veterans step up and newcomers shine. Returner Andrai Wright is hitting .556 to lead the team with five hits on the season and six RBI. Newcomer Jake Grubesic had a solid opening. He's batting .545 with six hits. The Tigers combined for 33 hits and 36 runs over the first three games of the season.

LAST GAME VS. LANE
Since rejoining the SIAC and NCAA Division II in 2019, Savannah State is 3-0 against Lane College. They last met on March 27, 2022 in Jackson, Tennessee. Savannah State won that game 19-0.
