Lady Tigers Drop Match To Piedmont

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's tennis played the nearly flawless Piedmont University team tough on Saturday, but fell in the final results, 2-5.

The Lady Tigers dropped to 6-4 on the season following the non-conference bout on home court. Savannah State returns to conference action at the second Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Roundup March 24-26 in Mobile, Alabama.

In the first court of singles action, Savannah State's Gabrielle Benn—who was named last week's SIAC Player of the Week—improved to 7-1 on the season, beating Abbey Grace Venham in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.

Julia Ramos picked up the Lady Tigers other point on the day with a win in the third court of singles action. Ramos beat Dakota Wilkes 6-2 and 6-2 to claim the point.

Amarlia Benn battled with Melissa Gish in the second court. Benn took the first set 6-4 and Gish took the second set 6-4 forcing a tiebreaker. Gish broke the stalemate, 10-6, to claim the point.

Caitlyn Schultz fell to Maggie Moody in the third court, 1-6 and 0-6. Sunzahra Banks fell to Allison Dempsey 1-6 and 3-6 in the fifth court. Bria Bembery, in the sixth court, fell to Mia Vasher 1-6 and 1-6.

Piedmont claimed the point for doubles action, winning all three courts. The Benn sisters fell to Moody and Gish, 4-6 in the first court. Ramos and Schultz fell to Venham and Wilkes 4-6 in the second court and Venus Ubiebi and Banks dropped the third court to Vasher and Dempsey, 1-6.

Piedmont improved to 12-1 with the win.
