Savannah, Ga. – Savannah State men's basketball will open the 2022-23 season this evening as both defending champions and underdogs again.

The Tigers strung together four consecutive wins at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship to claim the first SIAC title in program history since 1981, back in March.

But in a preseason SIAC poll a week ago, they were voted to finish third in the SIAC East Division. Ahead of last year's season, the Tigers were voted to finish fifth in the SIAC East. Instead, they earned the No. 3 seed and swept to victory.

LAST GAME
Savannah State drew the No. 8 seed in the South Region after winning the SIAC Championship and were paired with the No. 1 seed, perennial Division II South Region powerhouse Nova Southeastern who were 28-0 going into the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell 62-113. Nova won the Regional Finals but fell in the Elite Eight.

PLAYER OUTLOOK
Savannah State lost several of its top scorers from last year's team to graduation and will look to a mix of newcomers and veterans to defend the title this season. Guards Ayjay Plain, Zion Williams, Za'Khari Cobb, Eleik Bowles and forwards Aly Keys, Andrew Okorodudu and Larson Ashford will be key returning elements this season. Several freshmen could also play starting roles like Davis Warner, Zion Davis, and Cameron Edwards.

OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Voorhees University—a member of NAIA— have already played six games in the young season. They picked up wins against Wilberforce, Morris, and Brewton-Parker. They enter tonight's game off a 71-69 victory over Johnson & Wales. They are led by junior #2 Hector Rosario, who's averaging 10.7 points a game.
