SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State football plays the second and final game of the spring season today against Middle Georgia State. Kick-off at Theodore A. Wright Stadium is set for 2 p.m.

Due to a mandate from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), the game will be closed event. Fans can find the exclusive live stream of the game at ssuathletics.com/watch.

Following a 16-month hiatus, Savannah State football returned to the field of play on March 13 at the Gulf Coast Challenge. They faced a top-tier NCAA Division II team in West Alabama and for three quarters, were on par for a victory. But it was a rough fourth quarter from Savannah State, as West Alabama took the lead and held on for a 36-28 victory.

Savannah State football scheduled a 9-game 2020 season, beginning with a marquee matchup against NCAA Division II perennial powerhouse Valdosta State.  All games were canceled in late summer after the SIAC shut down sports due to the pandemic. Savannah State football, instead, went into a 10-week practice season culminating with an inter-squad scrimmage in November.

The two-game spring season will count in the record books as the 2020-21 season. Today's game is the first time Savannah State and Middle Georgia State will meet on the field. Middle Georgia State has played two games of their four game spring season. They won their first one against Gordon State 14-7. No score was posted for their game on March 20.

The 2019 Tigers (7-3, 5-0 SIAC) were the first to have a winning season since the 1998 Tigers, who finished 7-4. They're also the first team to post an undefeated record in conference play since the 1989 team. That team was coached by the legendary William "Bill" Davis, Savannah State's most successful head coach and fielded three-time All-SIAC, three-time Super Bowl Champion, and NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Shannon Sharpe.

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE FOOTBALL
Savannah State football began on Thanksgiving Day 1902 when Georgia Industrial College won its only game of the year.
Through the subsequent 100 years, Savannah State football won titles on the Division II and III levels, its most successful years coming as a Division II member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) from 1981-2000. Legendary coach William R. "Bill" Davis led the Tigers through most of this era, earning the program's best records of 8-2 and 8-1 in 1988, '89, respectively. Davis coached NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe during those successful years. After 17 years as a NCAA Division I program, Savannah State football moved back to NCAA Division II, rejoining the SIAC ahead of the 2019 season. Shawn Quinn was hired as the 26th head coach in the program's history on March 7, 2019.
