Shawn Quinn Resigns As Head Football Coach

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University Head Football Coach Shawn Quinn submitted his resignation Wednesday morning. It will be effective on Tuesday, December 7.

Following the sudden announcement, Savannah State Athletics Administration will make an assessment of the program. Updates will be forthcoming.

"On behalf of Savannah State University, I would like to thank Coach Quinn for his three years of service as our head coach," Savannah State President Kimberly Ballard-Washington said. "He wholeheartedly devoted himself to the success of the football program for which we are grateful."

"We are thankful for Coach Quinn's time here at Savannah State," Director of Athletics Opio Mashariki said. "He turned the page for Savannah State football and put us on track to be a competitive program within our new conference and division. As the search for a new coach begins, we will be looking for a person who can continue to build on the foundation that has been laid."

Quinn was hired in February of 2018 as a defensive coordinator for the Tigers. In December of 2018, he was named the interim head coach. On March 7, 2019, he was hired as the 26th head coach of Savannah State football following a nationwide search.

In his first head coaching job, he found success quickly at Savannah State. The 2019 Tigers posted a 7-3 overall record and a 5-0 conference record in their first season of competition back in NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Quinn is only the second head coach in program history to post a winning record in an inaugural season.

Following a cancelled 2020 season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Quinn and the Tigers put together a 1-1 record in the spring of 2021.

Quinn continued success into the 2021 season, taking the Tigers to their first eight win season since 1994, finishing 8-2 and 5-1 in the SIAC. Quinn's two full seasons at Savannah State were the best in program history since the mid-1990's when the Tigers were dominating their SIAC schedule.
