COLUMBIA, S.C. – A brand new squad took the court for Savannah State women's tennis this past weekend to open the 2020 season.

It will be the program's first season of operation in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and NCAA Division II. This year also marks the first in Interim Head Coach Chuck Keenan's tenure at Savannah State.

Keenan, a former tennis coach at Savannah College of Art and Design, was hired in early January. Since taking over, he built out a nearly full roster and earned his first win as a coach at Savannah State this past weekend.

The Lady Tigers opened their season with the first of two SIAC Roundups where they faced six conference teams over the course of two days in seven matches.

Savannah State fell to Clark Atlanta, 0-7 and 0-7, in the opening two games on Friday. After falling 0-7 to Spring Hill, they fared a little better against Lane College, losing 1-5 to close out Friday. On Saturday, they lost to Albany State, 0-7 and then Tuskegee, 0-4, later on in the day.

The Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season in the final game on Saturday, beating LeMoyne-Owen 4-1. Bria Brembry beat Ciera Cunning 6-0 and 3-1 to win the No. 1 singles game.

Playing in the two spot, Savannah State's Maiya Broughton beat Zaria Brazier 6-1 in the opening set, but dropped the second set 3-4. Carlissa Stewart beat Eva Fondren 6-4 and 6-0 in the third singles spot for the Lady Tigers.

Former basketball player, turned tennis player Taityana Pittman earned Savannah State a win in the No. 4 singles spot, beating Kendra Sewell 6-2 and 6-0. Stella Ekwalla fell to Kionna Williams in the No. 5 singles spot, 0-6 and 1-6, for LeMoyne-Owen's only points on the day.

In doubles action, Brembry and Broughton beat Sewell and Cunning 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Stewart and Pittman beat Braizer and Fondren in No. 2 doubles, 6-1.

The Lady Tigers continue the season with four consecutive home matches. They face Lander University on Feb. 28, College of Coastal Georgia on March 7, Radford University on March 13 and Belmont Abbey College on March 17.
