SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State University interim head football coach
Shawn Quinn is pleased to announce that 18 student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play football with the Tigers.
Â
"We recruited good students. Players that are very athletic and excited to attend Savannah State. They come from a lot of winning programs which is an important component for us moving forward. We were able to add a lot of speed, athleticism and length," stated Quinn.
Â
Of the 18 players, eight hail from the Georgia Coastal Empire or the South Carolina Low Country.
Â
Savannah natives inking set to join the Orange and Blue are
Jordan Grant (Savannah Christian),
Julian Roberts (Memorial Day) and
Namon Pointer (Johnson High).
Â
Ronald Fuselier (Richmond Hill High),
Devin Howard (Camden County High) and
Karrington Warner (Liberty County High) hail from neighboring coastal empire towns while
Jaylon Thompson (Bluffton High) and Gabriel Long (May River High) are from the Carolina Low Country.
Â
Other recruits from the state of Georgia are
Kyle Frazier (Augusta),
Jayden Simpkins (Evans), Quentavious Wilson (Forsyth), Jamaurion Hartage (Forsyth) and
Tyler Moore (Norcross).
Â
In addition to the 11 players from Georgia and two from South Carolina, four players are set to come to the university by the sea from the state of Florida.
Â
Crossing the border of the Sunshine State to come to SSU are Einja Carter (New Smyrna Beach),
Malik Fleming (Hallandale),
Tyler Howard (Jacksonville) and
Seaton Waldhauer (Palm Coast).
Â
Quinn also had praise for the remaining assistants (
Russell DeMasi,
Thomas Sims and
Glenn Davis) for the job they did.
Â
"The assistant coaches did a great job in selling Savannah State, the city of Savannah and having an opportunity to play in a league we can win."
Â
As listed by position, Savannah State added seven defensive backs, five defensive linemen, three running backs, two offensive linemen and one quarterback.
Â
"Yes, a lot of these players have length and speed that we haven't had on our roster in the past. We recruited players we think will make our team better," said Quinn about the chance of the defensive signees having a chance to contribute early to a defense that finished the season ranked third in the Football Championship Subdivision in pass defense and 19th in total defense.
Â
Carter, a running back is the smallest recruit at 5-foot-8 while Thompson, who plays on the defensive line, is the tallest at 6-foot-4. Waldhauer, an offensive lineman, is the largest, tipping the scale at 290-pounds.
Â
Savannah State posted a 2-8 record in 2018, their last season as a member of the FCS.
Â
The Tigers will play the 2019 season as a member of Division II in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
