Charleston, S.C. – After earning their third win of the season, a 17-10 victory over conference opponent Morehouse College, the Savannah State Tigers are off to their best start since the 1998 season when they won four of their first five games.
This will be the ninth meeting of the two teams. Historically, Charleston Southern has a 7-1 lead over SSU. The last time SSU played the Buccaneers they won 23-3. The Tigers put together a defensive clinic led by free safety

CSU enters the contest 0-4 on the season after a 13-22 loss to The Citadel, a 21-27 loss to North Carolina A&T, a 10-72 loss to South Carolina, and a 13-46 loss to Furman. SSU lost their opening game of the season 22-23 to Florida Tech, but bounced back with a record-setting 60-21 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg, a 21-14 win over Benedict College, and a 17-10 win over Morehouse College.

INTER-DIVISIONAL
The last time SSU beat a Division I program playing as a Division II program was in 1992. Under legendary coach Bill Davis, the Tigers beat Central Florida 33-31. They also beat Bethune-Cookman that year 31-21 and the previous year 35-20. Â

BUCCANEER CONNECTION
New SSU safeties coach
Zach Johnson met head coach Sean Quinn while playing at Charleston Southern in 2012. Quinn was the Defensive Coordinator for CSU at the time. Johnson played for the Bucs from 2011-2016.

SSU head coach
Shawn Quinn is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers but the Chicago native has made his rounds on the collegiate level having coached at nine other programs in addition to SSU. Those programs include The Citadel, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Charleston Southern, Northwestern State, Georgia Southern, Louisiana Lafayette, Tennessee and Louisiana State.

The SSU roster is made up of players from nine states, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Texas, Ohio, Alabama and Nevada, as well as the Bahamas

After spending the past 19 years in Division I, the Tiger athletic program is now back in Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Conference (SIAC).
