SAVANNAH, Ga. – No. 13 Savannah State University women's basketball team (5-24) faces No. 12 Florida A&M University (7-23) in the battle of upsets Thursday at 2 p.m. at Scope Arena in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
The Lady Tigers upended No. 4 Norfolk State University 51-48 in the first round, while the Rattlers defeated No. 5 Howard 69-64 Monday.
Junior forward
Kaylee Allen leads the Lady Tigers with 17.9 points per game, which ranks second in the MEAC, and averages 5.8 rebounds. The Cincinnati, Ohio native averages 21.4 points, which leads the conference, and 7.4 rebounds, which ranks 10
th, in the MEAC in conference play. Allen needs 10 points to set the school single season record in scoring.
Freshman center
Alexxus Sowell leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the MEAC and leads with 2.3 blocks per game, which ranks second in the conference and ranks 30
th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In conference play, Sowell averages 8.5 rebounds, which ranks eighth in the MEAC, and is second in the conference with 3.1 blocks.
The Rattlers has lost three of the last four games and are led by Florence Ouattara with 13.9 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game, Shalaunda Burney-Robinson with 9.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game and Shakeyrra Morrison with 8.4 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game.
The winner moves on to face the top-seed North Carolina A&T University Friday at noon.
