BALTIMORE, Md.- Savannah State whittled a 11-point deficit down to four but could not get any closer in a 83-75 loss to Morgan State, in a game played at Hill Field House.
It was the third loss in a row for SSU (10-15, 7-5 MEAC).
The crowd of 1,056 saw the Tigers trail 64-61 with 7:13 left but a 8-0 run by MSU increased their advantage to 72-61 with 2:09 showing on the clock.
Savannah State responded with a 10-3 spurt to close their gap to 75-71 with one minute left after a layup by Robert Kelly.
Morgan State would use free throws to extended their lead to eight with 38 seconds left but the Tigers got a layup and free throw from
Troyce Manassa and a free throw from
Casey Wells to 79-75 with ten seconds remaining.Â
SSU would not score again while Tiwian Kendley scored four free throws to give the Bears a eight point victory.
Manassa scored 24 points while dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds.
Dexter McClanahan came off the bench to add 17 points and four assists.
In the first half, Savannah State led 17-8 but the Bears had a 30-10 run to go ahead 38-27 with 4:22 left in the period.
SSU would close their deficit to six but Morgan State went into intermission with a 47-39 lead.
The Tigers opened the second half with seven straight points to get within one (47-46).
The game remained close until the Bears used a 8-0 run to take a 72-61 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
Kendley, who made 13 of 14 free throw attempts, had a game-high 25 points for Morgan State (11-14, 8-4 MEAC).
SSU shot 38.1 percent from the floor, made 27.5 percent of their 3-point shots and hit 61.5 percent of their free throws.
Morgan State used their size to out-scored the Tigers in the paint 38 to 18 and also win the rebounding battle 52 to 38.
The Bears shot 38.5 percent from the field, made 23.8 percent of their 3-point shots and 73.7 percent of their free throws.
