Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior guard Donasja Scott led the Savannah State University women's basketball team with 11 points as the Lady Tigers (1-2) fell to Providence College (2-2) 78-48 Tuesday on Day One of the Savannah Invitational in the Savannah Civic Center.
The Friars shot 60 (15-for-25) percent from the 3-point line and shot 52.6 (30-for-57) percent from the floor.
Scott added seven rebounds, while freshman center Alexxus Sowell recorded a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Heniaya Moton addeeed nine points, while freshman guard Le'Terria Mathis added six points, two rebounds and three assists and freshman center Kayla Vance added seven rebounds and four points.
The first quarter was close as neither team had more of a three-point lead during the quarter and saw six ties. Providence scored five of the first seven points to take a three-point lead, 5-2, with 8:31 remaining in the quarter, but Savannah State scored 11 of the next 18 points to take a two-point lead, 13-11, with 3:53 left. The Friars closed the quarter scoring seven of the final 12 points to tie the game at 18 after the first quarter.
Providence scored the first six points of the second quarter to take a six-point lead, 24-18, with 6:45 remaining in the quarter, but two free throws by freshman guard Jazmine Bartlett cut the lead to four points, 24-20, with 5:59 left in the first half. Providence finished the quarter scoring 18 of the final 20 points to take a 20-point lead, 42-22, at the half.
The Friars scored 16 of the first 21 points to increase their lead to 31 points, 58-27, with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter, but Savannah State scored 11 of the next 15 points to close within 24 points, 62-38, with 40 seconds left. A Providence layup with three seconds gave the Friars a 26-point lead, 64-38, after three quarters.
Providence scored 12 of the first 17 points of the fourth quarter to increase its lead to 33 points, 76-43, with 4:36 remaining in the quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored five of the final seven points to cut the final margin to 30 points.
The Friars were led by Jovana Nogic with 24 points, Clara Che with 15 points, Maddie Jolin with 13 points and Ny'Dajah Jackson with nine rebounds.
The Lady Tigers continue the tournament with University of Richmond Wednesday at 2 p.m. before finishing with University of Florida at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
