WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – LaRon James jumped 7.00 meters (22-11.75) in the long jump to set the school record in the event to finish third at the UNCG Early Bird 6-Way Sunday to begin the indoor season.
The previous record was
Malik Franklin's long jump of 6.98 meters (22-11) at the 2015 MEAC Indoor Championship.
The Tigers recorded seven other top-five finishes. SSU recorded three top-three finishes in the triple jump with
Donterious Copeland winning the event with 14.73 meters (48-4), followed by Franklin with a distance of 14.72 meters (48-3.5) and James with a jump of 14.44 meters (47-4.5). Franklin also finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.92 meters (22-8.5).
On the track side,
Nigel Brown finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.29, followed by
Justin Leggett with a fourth place time of 22.54.
Gabriel Woods finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.52.
The men's team recorded six other top-10 results. On the track side, Brown led the way in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94, followed by Leggett with a ninth-place finish with a time of 7.02.
Sahlu Atakilti finished seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:18.52.
On the field side, Copeland finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 6.64 meters (21-9.5), while
Robert Simmons finished with 10
th with a jump of 6.38 meters (20-11.25). Simmons also finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.88 meters (45-6.5).
On the women's side, the Lady Tigers recorded seven top-10 finishes. On the field side,
Ravyn Mike finished ninth in the long jump with a distance of 5.21 meters (17-1.25) and finished ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 10.42 meters (34-2.25).
Bryshea Jackson finished sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.08 meters (36-4.25).
Faith Shears finished seventh in the shot put in a throw of 10.54 meters (34-7), while Ariel Homes finished ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 8.00 meters (26-3).
On the track side, Savannah State relay team of
Miara Elmore,
Danielle Derricho, Tyneshia Quarterman,
Cayla Williams finished 10
th with a time of 4:08.45.
Other women's track results include
Jada Morgan led SSU with a time of 7.96 with 60-meter dash, followed by
Destiny Hall with a 15
th-place with a time of 7.99, Quarterman with a 19
th-place finish with a time of 8.04, Williams finished with 24
th-place with a time of 8.14 and Atahja Williams-Chappel finished 26
th with a time of 8.16.
Quarterman led the way in the 200-meter dash with a 13
th-place with a time of 26.20, followed by Morgan's 16
th-place finish with a time of 26.35, Hall with a 20
th-place finish with a time of 26.79, Williams finished 24
th with a time of 27.13 and Williams-Chappel finished 30
th with a time of 27.92.
Derricho finished 16
th with a time of 1:05.37 in the 400-meter dash, followed by Wyatt with a 17
th-place finish with a time of 1:08.14. Williams-Chappel finished 18
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.75.
Other men's track results include Woods' 23
rd-place finish with a time of 25.25, while
Elijah West led the way in the 800-meter run with a 17
th-place in a time of 2:07.62, followed by
Randolph Barratt finished 19
th in a time of 2:09.53 and
Markendy Pierre finished 22
nd with a time of 2:13.51.
Michael Smith led the way in the one-mile run with a 12
th-place finish in a time of 4:37.99, followed by
Abbas Abbkar finished 14
th place with a time of 4:40.55 and
Cameron Pack finished 20
th with a time of 4:49.91.
Other women's field results include Elmore's 14
th place finish with a jump of 4.95 meters (16-3) in the long jump, followed by
Brenda Johnson with a 15
th-place finish in a jump of 4.92 meters (16-1.75) and Jackson finished 23
rd in a distance with 4.66 meters (15-3.5). Holmes finished 14
th in the shot put with a throw of 8.16 meters (26-9.25).
The men's and women's track and field teams are back in action on Jan. 7 for the Orange & Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C.
