Austin Dasent scored 21 points to lead five Savannah State players in double figures as the Tigers won their home opener with a 101-93 victory over Middle Georgia State.
The 101 points scored were the most for a SSU team since the 2010-11 squad scored 103 points against Carver Bible College.
The 1,134 fans in attendance at Tiger Arena witnessed both teams combine to hit 40 3-point shots with SSU making 24, which were four short of the NCAA record set in 1994 when Troy made 28 3-pointers against George Mason.
The Tigers, who raised their record to 1-2, have never loss a home opener in Horace Braodnax's 12 year tenure as head coach.
Joshua Floyd started the game with a 3-pointer for Savannah State as the Tigers took a 11-7 advantage with 17:49 on the clock.
Middle Georgia State rallied with nine unanswered points to go ahead 16-11 with 14:45 left in the first period.
Down 30-28 with 9:40 remaining in the half, SSU receiving scoring from five different players as they went on a 19-2 run to take a 47-32 lead with four and a half minutes left.
A 3-pointer by
Dexter McClanahan gave SSU their largest lead of the half at 57-36 with 1:56 remaining.
Savannah State led 59-40 at intermission.
The Tigers outscored Middle Georgia State 12-2 during the first three minutes of the second half to increase their lead to 71-42.
Trailing 77-48 with 12:17 left, the Knights strung together a 32-10 run that sliced their deficit to seven with 3:49 on the clock.
The teams then traded 3-pointers and the Knights got within six but could not get any closer with just over two minutes remaining.
Floyd added 17 points for SSU while
Isaiah Felder scored 16. Seller and
Jahir Cabeza chipped in 11 points each. Cabeza added eight rebounds and five blocks in a winning effort.
SSU shot 44.8percent from the field and made 46.2 percent of their 3-point attempts.Â
Kieston Standfield led the Knights (3-2) with 15 points and 13 rebounds.Â
Middle Georgia State shot 39.3 percent from the floor and made 42.1 percent of their 3-point shots while out-rebounding Savannah State 58 to 41.
