TIGERS ON FACEBOOK: facebook.com/SSUAthleticsSAVANNAH, Ga. –Savannah State University volleyball team finishes its 11-match roadstand with its longest road trip to Tucson, Ariz., this weekend to face two national ranked opponents for the Wildcat Classic.
The Lady Tigers (0-12) play a doubleheader on Friday starting with No. 2 Texas (7-1) at 3 p.m., followed by New Mexico State (8-3) at 8 p.m. SSU finishes the tournament against host No. 16 Arizona (8-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Junior setter
Caitlynn Masoe leads the team with 44 kills, 1.29 kills per set, and with 110 assists, 3.24 assists per set and with nine service aces, 0.26 service ace per set, and added 55 digs, 1.62 digs per set.
Junior libero
Alexis Washington leads the team with 108 digs, 3.00 digs per set, while freshman outside hitter
Makayla Tam leads the team with 1.33 kills per set and added seven service aces, 0.23 service ace and 29 digs.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to in-state rival Georgia Southern 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-14) in Statesboro, Ga., Tuesday night. Senior outside hitter
Christian Lyle led the team with six kills, a .462 hitting percentage and four block assists. Freshman setter
Briana Littlejohn led the team with 10 assists and added three digs and two blocks assists, while Washington led the team with 11 digs.
Texas is coming off hosting its third tournament of the season going 3-0 at the Texas Classic defeating UTSA (3-0), Santa Clara (3-0) and No. 14 Colorado State (3-0). The Longhorns are led by Amy Neal with 103 kills, 3.81 kills per set, Chloe Collins with 286 assists, 10.59 assists per set, and Cat McCoy with 117 digs, 4.33 digs per set.
Arizona went 2-1 at the Blackbird Invitational in Long Island, N.Y., defeating Syracuse (3-1) and LIU Brooklyn (3-0) and falling to No. 15 Ohio State (3-1) in its last match. The Wildcats are led by Kalei Mau with 107 kills, 4.12 kills per set, Penina Snuka with 341 assists, 11.37 assists per set, and Mackenzie Kleespies with 116 digs, 3.87 digs per set.
New Mexico State hosted the NMSU-UTEP Borderland Classic going 3-1 with wins over Denver (3-2), Brown (3-0) and Robert Morris (3-0), but fell to Oklahoma (3-2) to start the tournament. The Lobos are led by Gwen Murphy with 149 kills, 3.39 kills per set, Taylor Livoti with 242 assists, 5.50 assists per set, and Jordan Abalos with 131 digs, 3.20 digs per set.
The Lady Tigers return home for its longest homestand of the season hosting the next four matches, starting with Charleston Southern on Monday at 6 p.m., followed by The Citadel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Willcox-Wiley Gym. SSU opens MEAC play against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. and Florida A&M on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.
