Women’s Tennis Drops Two Matches

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's tennis returned to their home court on Tuesday, hosting back-to-back nonconference matches on Tiger Tennis Courts.

In the day's opening match with Coastal Carolina, the first two courts of singles competition saw plenty of action. SSU's number one player, Kamelia Dimitrova, took on Honami Yazawa. Dimitrova fell 2-6 in the opening set, but rebounded with a 7-5 victory in the second set. Yazawa took the tie-breaker, however, 10-5.

Sandy Lochu, playing in the second court against Romane Delay also dropped her first set, 4-6. Lochu bounced back with a 6-0 rout of Delay in the second set to send the match to a tie-breaker. Lochu fell 4-10 in the standoff.

Jennyfer Vivas fell to Sara Bondar in the third set, 0-6 and 0-6. Bria Burrows dropped the fourth set to Mila Majtan in straight sets, 0-6 and 0-6. Tiffany Williams lost to Cari Berry in the fifth court in straight sets as well.

In double's action against Coastal Carolina, Dimitrova and Lochu fell to Yazawa and Bondar 2-8 in the first court. Libby Scott and Marie Babyan beat Vivas and Burrows in the second court 8-0. Coastal Carolina improved to 7-4 on the season with the 7-0 rout of SSU.

SSU took on Western Carolina in the day's second match. Originally, the game was scheduled for Wednesday, but due to weather moving through the area, teams moved the match up a day.

Vivas took on Nicole Nielly in the third court of singles action. Vivas fell in the opening set 6-2, but rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second set. Nielly earned the match point with a 10-7 tie-breaker win.

Dimitrova fell to Megan McLinden in the first court in close sets, 4-6 and 3-6. Lochu put up a fight against Shannon Bettiol in the second court, but ultimately fell 3-6 and 2-6.

Burrows dropped the third court to Erin Maguire in straight sets, 1-6 and 0-6. Williams fell to Montse Mesalles in the fifth court, 0-6 and 0-6. The sixth court was defaulted.

Dimitrova and Lochu faced off with McLinden and Bettiol in doubles action. In the pro-style set, the match was tied up at 7, forcing a tie-breaker. Dimitrova and Lochu fell 4-7 in the decision set.

Vivas and Burrows dropped the second court of doubles to Nielly and Maguire, 2-8. The third court in doubles was defaulted. Western Carolina took the 6-0 win to improve to 3-5 on the season.

The Lady Tigers fall to 2-7 on the season. The two matches were a warmup for four straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matches over the coming week.

SSU opens the three-day conference swing with matches against North Carolina Central and Norfolk State on March 13 in Florence, South Carolina.
They return home on March 28 for their final regular season game against MEAC rival Bethune-Cookman. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
