Second Half Dooms Tigers in Loss to Hornets

Box Score DOVER, Del.- Savannah State led by eight points at halftime but Delaware State outscored the Tigers 27-8 to start the second period and went on to defeat SSU 59-50 in Memorial Hall.
 
After shooting a respectable 44.4 percent from the field in the first half, the crowd of 1,367 saw SSU go cold after intermission as they made six of 22 shots from the floor and only one of seven of their 3-point attempts. Savannah State did make all eight of their free throw attempts in the final twenty minutes of action.
 
Savannah State led 29-21 at the half but the Hornets came out strong in the second period.
 
DSU scored the first five points of the second half to get within three but a layup by Jamal Norman and a jumper by Brian Pearson put the Tigers ahead 33-26 with 17:13 left.
 
The Hornets answered with an 18-2 run to grab a 44-35 lead with 9:55 remaining.
 
Delaware State stretched their lead to 52-39 with just under six minutes left.
 
Down by a dozen with 2:13 on the clock, the Tigers made a late push and closed their gap to 58-50 with 36 seconds left but could get no closer.
 
The lost keeps the Tigers winless on the road and drops their overall record to 4-14 and 0-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
 
Terel Hall was the lone SSU player in double figures with 12 points.  Norman and Alante Fenner each chipped in nine points while Norman and Saadiq Muhammad had five rebounds apiece.
 
Delaware State led by five in the first half before the Tigers scored 11 unanswered points to go ahead 19-13 with 7:57 left.
 
A 3-pointer by Demarcus Bryant gave SSU a 27-20 cushion with 2:15 remaining and a pair of free throws by Treyvon Francis to end the half gave Savannah State a 29-21 halftime edge.
 
DSU (9-9, 3-1) received 16 points apiece from Tyshawn Bell and Amere May. Kendall Gray added 17 rebounds.
 
The Hornets out-rebounded SSU 34 to 26 as they shot 44.4 percent from the field and made seven of 17 of their 3-point attempts.
