Tigers’ Offense Impressive in Second Scrimmage

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Savannah State University football program had a buzz about them when they exited their locker room prior to their scrimmage on April 5. Players came out pumped up from the pre-game talk given to them by former SSU coach and current New Orleans Saints secondary coach Wesley McGriff. The talk focused on taking care of business, both on and off the field.

"We want the players to pay attention to little things," said head coach Earnest Wilson, III. "We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores, not juniors and seniors on the team."

The team's mission was to run five-sets of 12 plays, totaling 60 for the day, with a full core of referees and umpires overlooking the action.

On the first-play of the opening drive one of the few upperclassmen on the squad, Cornel Weston - a red-shirted wide receiver, hauled in an 18-yard pass from quarterback Leon Prunty.

Prunty, a second-year player, is doing his best to stave off four other quarterbacks vying for his position this year. He put on one of his best performances by hitting players with accurate throws and impressing a lot of the fans sitting in the stands that came out to see what the team.

During the same drive, Prunty hooked up with first-year player Arshon Spaulding, Jr., for an incredible run-and-catch 61-yard touchdown.

After completion of that play, Coach Wilson lit into the defense for letting the player run up the field unabated.

"I know the defense didn't have all their starters today," Wilson said.  "Things are looking a lot better on both sides of the ball and all I am focusing on is us getting better."

One of the key factors contributing to the team rounding into shape is that they are better conditioned mentally and physically.

Ken Coggins, Savannah State's new strength and conditioning coach, is maintaining his grip on all the players to make sure they stay on task.

"The guys are buying into the program and working hard," Coggins said. "This is a continuation from the off-season, and this is getting them ready to win some football games."

The day was very gratifying for the offense as many players found their way into the end zone. Transfer running back, Richard Williams accounted for more than 100 yards rushing and receiving, including an 80-yard pass from quarterback Victorian Hardison.

Senior wide receiver Kris Drummond also hauled in a pass in the coffin corner from Hardison for another score.
Williams had some notable running plays called back for penalties, but he did cross pay dirt once again on a 14-yard run.

Kearsean Wilson, a transfer from Eastern Arizona Community College via Columbia, S.C., threw a touchdown to former Windsor Forest tight end Avery Barnes for another score.

Prunty re-entered the game later in the contest and ran in for a short yardage touchdown, and then teamed up with Drummond for another score. Weston ended the day's scoring by catching a spectacular pass from Hardison.

The Tigers will conclude their spring practice drills next Saturday at the annual Orange & Blue Spring Game at Ted Wright Stadium. Kick off is set for 6 p.m.
