Tigers Outlast SC State 75-65

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Deven Williams led four Savannah State players in double figures as the Tigers posted a 75-65 win over South Carolina State in the SHM Center.
 
The crowd of 927 saw Williams score 11 of his  game-high 16 points in the first half. As a team, SSU shot 61.3 percent from the field in the opening period while making 5 of 8 of their 3-point attempts.
 
Savannah State was held without a field goal the final 4:55 and led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
 
The Tigers scored the first points of the game on a layup by Joshua Montgomery and pushed their lead to 26-9 with 11:17 remaining in the period.
 
South Carolina State could only get as close as 13 in the first half but a pair of free throws by Keierre Richards with 52 seconds left gave SSU a 47-27 cushion.
 
SSU led 47-30 at the break.
 
The Tigers started the second half with layups from Williams and Khiry White to increase their lead to 21.
 
A 13-5 run by the Bulldogs whittled their deficit down to 56-43 with 13:49 but Savannah State responded with a 13-2 spurt to go ahead by 24 at the 8:54 mark.
 
A pair of free throws by Matthew Hezekiah started a 20-4 run by the Bulldogs that cut SSU's lead to 73-65 with just 47 seconds left in the game.
 
Richards hit two free throws for SSU with 35 seconds left to seal the Tigers win.
 
SSU, who shot 52.8 percent from the field in the contest, improved to 8-5 in the MEAC and 10-17 overall.
 
Richards added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Savannah State while White and Alante Feener chipped in 10 points apiece. White had 4 steals and 3 assists while Fenner grabbed 5 rebounds.
 
South Carolina State (9-17, 5-8) was led by Hezekiah's 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded SSU 39 to 32  and out-scored the Tigers 35-28 in the second period.

Savannah native Greg Mortimer had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in a losing effort.
