Cheerleading Tops Jamfest Jam-Bash Series For Second Year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Savannah State cheerleading squad's garnered two first place finishes for the second year straight at the Jamfest Cheer and Dance Series at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on January 25.

The Savannah State all-girl team finished in first place in the Elite Division 1 Collegiate Cheer category, while the SSU coed team also garnered first place honors in the Elite Division I Collegiate Cheer category.

It was the first season that SSU fielded both an all-girl team and a coed squad. SSU won the Elite Division I Coed Collegiate title last year, in their first year competing at Jamfest.

"I'm very proud of both teams," head coach Kellie Fletcher said. "They made great strides and improvements.  We had amazing support from families and friends on both days of the competition. We are looking forward to the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Cheerleading Championship and our first experience at NCA (National Cheerleaders Association) College Nationals."

The SSU cheer program also competed, for the second year, at Cheersport Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia on February 15 and 16. Cheersport Nationals is the nation's largest cheerleading competition and is held each year at the Georgia World Congress Center.

On day one of competition, the all-girl squad finished in 4th place in the College 4 All-Girl Division. The SSU coed team placed 3rd in the College 6 Coed Division. In day two, SSU's all-girl squad finished 4th overall, while the coed team finished in 6th place overall.

The Tigers will compete in the MEAC Championship on March 10 in Norfolk, Virginia. They will close out the 2013-14 season at the NCA College National Championship on April 10-11 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
