Track and Field Opens Indoor Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2014-15 indoor track & field season on Monday at the University of North Carolina Greensboro 6-Way Meet.
 
SSU won two events at the meet. Lemaar Shakir won the 60 meter hurdles event with a time of 8.31 and Jaymi White won the long jump with a distance of 5.41 meters. Shakir also finished 2nd  in the 400 meter run with a time of 51.29.
 
In the 60 meter dash, Cameron Hall placed 5th  with a time of 7.06, followed by Justin Leggett in 8th with a time of 7.07.
 
Justin Leggett placed 6th  in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.86, while SSU newcomer Michael Smith finished 11th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.44.
 
In the men's distance medley, the team of Smith, Brandon Davis, Corey Jones and Micah Richards placed 4th with a time of 11:25.43. The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Donterious Copeland, Corey Jones, Malik Franklin and Dolphurs Hayes finished 5th in the event with a time of 3:27.54.
 
Newcomer Malik Franklin led the Tigers in the field events, finishing 2nd  in the long jump with a distance of 7.03m.
 
Stevenson Crowell placed 3rd  in the shot put with a distance of 12.23m. In the weight throw, returner Derrick Akins finished 4th  with a distance of 11.59m.
 
SSU newcomer Asea Mayfield led the Lady Tigers on the track with a 5th place finish in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:27.37.
 
In the 60 meter dash, Ravyn Mike finished with a time of 8.27, leading five other Lady Tigers in the event.  In the 200 meter dash, newcomer Ashley Goss finished with a time of 28.97, followed closely by returner Alysia Potts, who ran a 29.28.
 
White and Mike finished tied for 8th in the high jump, both with a distance of 1.40 meters.

Six teams competed in the meet, including fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schools North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. Also in the mix were USC Upstate, North Carolina State, and UNC-Greesboro.
 
Savannah State returns to action with the Winston-Salem State Open on January 18 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
