Tiger Bites
- The Tigers and Bulldogs will meet for the 17th time with S.C. State leading the series, 15-1. SSU's only win over the  Bulldogs was a 14-9 victory in 2001. Current SCSU head coach Buddy Pough was hired the following season.
Â
- SSU linebacker Marquis Smith leads the nation and the MEAC in tackles for loss averaging 2.4 per game. Smith is 6th nationally and 3rd in the MEAC in sacks averaging 1.14 per game, and he is 9th nationally and 4th in the conference in forced fumbles, averaging .43 per game.
- SSU's "Air-Raid" offense has the Tigers currently ranked 4th in the conference in passing offense averaging 180.4 yards per game. SSU is averaging 215.5 yards through the air in its last four games.
- After the first eight games, the Tigers have already surpassed their 2013 season totals in several defensive categories: SSU has ten interceptions compared to eight a year ago; has forced 12 fumbles compared to six last season; has 11 fumble recoveries compared to six last year and has 18 sacks compared to 13 a year ago.
Â
- Against NCCU, SSU's running backs ran for over 100 yards for the second time this season. Led by sophomore Richard Williams' 87 yards, SSU totaled 114 yards on the ground. SSU ran for a season high 145 yards in its first game of the season against Middle Tennessee.
Â
- Savannah State is one of two MEAC teams still winless in conference play. SSU and Howard (1-7) are still fighting for their first conference win. The Tigers and Bison will meet on Nov. 8, 2014 in Savannah.
Â
- Michael Wallace was promoted to defensive coordinator prior to preseason camp. Wallace was the Tigers defensive coordinator from 1995-97.
Â
 - Junior wide out Cantrell Frazier has accounted for four of the 12 offensive touchdowns for the Tigers this season. The Fulton County, Ga. native has caught three touchdowns and ran for one.

The Game
Savannah State
The quest for a victory continues for Savannah State's football team, and the next stop along the trail is Orangeburg, S.C., where the Tigers will be South Carolina State's Homecoming opponent at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Dawson Stadium.
Â
SSU (0-8 overall, 0-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) also has lost 28 consecutive MEAC games and will try to turn its misfortune into fortune when it faces an S.C. State team that was limited to 126 total yards against Bethune-Cookman last Saturday in Orangeburg, S.C.
S.C. State (5-3, 3-1 MEAC) beat Bethune-Cookman, 20-14, but 49 of its 126 total yards came on a touchdown pass with 33 seconds to play in the game.
Â
SSU's Wilson said he believes S.C. State's starting quarterback, Adrian Kollock, will play against the Tigers. Kollock, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound redshirt sophomore from Spartanburg, S.C., was sidelined with an injury for most of the game against B-CU but he replaced Calvin Giles-McClary and threw the game-winning 49-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Austin Smith.
Â
SSU, which is coming off a 42-14 loss to North Carolina Central last Saturday in Durham, N.C., is 1-15 in the series against S.C. State.
Â
Last season, the Tigers lost, 45-9, to the Bulldogs in Savannah. SSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to Marquis Smith's 36-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. S.C. State took a 7-6 lead in the first quarter before SSU regained the lead, 9-7, early in the second quarter on John Barron's 22-yard field goal.
Â
Pough, during his weekly news conference, said he hopes his players do not overlook SSU.
"You talk about a team that can sack the quarterback against a team that can't doggone move the football. Shoot. Let me tell you something. That's a doggone set up for us to be really hurting on Saturday," Pough said of SSU, which has sacked quarterbacks 18 times this season. "So we'd better get ourselves together because if not, Savannah (State) will be in here and it won't be pretty."

Giles-McClary, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound freshman from Kingstree, S.C., is 16-of-33 passing (48.48 percent) for 167 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Running back Jalen Simmons, a 5-foot-8, 205-pound junior from Charlotte, N.C., has run 136 times for 676 yards and five touchdowns.
But the Bulldogs' strength is its defense.

He tied the MEAC and Football Championship Subdivision single-game sack record, and broke S.C. State's single-game sack record previously held by Chatric Darby (four in 1997). Hargrave on Monday was named the MEAC's Defensive Player of the Week.
Linebacker Justin Hughes, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound senior from Virginia Beach, Va., has made a team-high 56 tackles.
On special teams, Antonio Hamilton, a 6-foot, 185-pound redshirt junior from Johnson, S.C., returned a punt for a 91-yard touchdown against B-CU. He was named the MEAC's Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
