Baylor Cruises Past Savannah State

Box Score Waco, Tx.- Playing their final non-conference game of the season as well as their first game of 2014, the Savannah State basketball team lost their 10th game in a row following a 80-50 setback from no. 9 ranked Baylor.

The crowd of 5,685 in the Ferrell Center saw the Bears shoot 52.9 percent from the field while four Baylor players finish in double figures.

Josh Montgomery came off the bench to lead SSU (2-12) with 15 points, all in the first half. He made 4 of 6 of his 3-point attempts.

The Tigers scored the first points of the contest on a jumper by Khiry White but Baylor answered with a 11-2 run.

Midway in the first half, a Montgomery 3-pointer cut SSU's deficit to 23-17 but the Bears responded with a 17-4 run to take a 19-point lead with 4:34 remaining.

Savannah State was able to get within 14 but went into the intermission trailing 46-30.

"[Baylor is] every bit of what their rankings are. They have a lot of different weapons to hurt you with and they are just huge and big. They are a huge, big team. I know [BU Head Coach Scott Drew] is looking to be extremely successful in the Big 12, and probably going deep in the NCAA tournament," said SSU coach Horace Broadnax.

In the second half, the Tigers only made eight field goals as they shot 26.7 percent from the field. SSU finished the game shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor.

Both squads came out cold to start the second period.

It took Baylor nearly four minutes to score a basket while Savannah State didn't make their first field goal until the 14:27 mark after a jumper by Jeremiah Hill.

The Tigers could only get as close as 15 and a 16-5 surge by Baylor opened up a 73-47 cushion for the Bears with 3:56 on the clock.

A dunk by Jyles Smith cut SSU's deficit to 24 with 3:18 remaining but that would be the final field goal for the Tigers on the night.

Smith had 7 points and 9 rebounds for the Tigers while Terrel Hall had 5 assists.

Baylor used their size to out-rebound SSU 41 to 31.

"[Baylor was] bigger than us on the inside and we were just trying to get guys to pull off the wings and try to get their bigs to rotate over. We were trying to let the small guys touch it -- they didn't necessarily have to score -- just touch it, and kick back out. Sometimes when you practice something at a certain speed and in the game it happens at a higher speed, your brain has a tendency to not work like it did at that lower speed. So sometimes some guys forget. That is what these bigger programs do, they get you outside of your comfort zone, and when you get out of that comfort zone you can't react and you start thinking. And when you start thinking on the basketball court against a program like Baylor you are going to be in trouble,"said Broadnax.

Taurean Prtice led Baylor (12-2) with 15 points.

Baylor went 19 for 28 at the free throw line while the Tigers were just 2 of 4.
