Hassan Lifts SSU Past Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C.- After playing through a six game losing streak, the Savannah State men's basketball team has now won seven in a row, after a 52-42 victory over Howard in Burr Gym.

The crowd of 556 saw Rashad Hassan come off the bench to score 25 points and pull down seven rebounds. The preseason MEAC PLayer of the Year made all eight of his free throw attempts and was 8 of 12 from the field.

The win keeps the Tigers within striking distance of conference leaders Norfolk State and North Carolina Central.

Mike Phillips' jumper with 7:32 left tied the game at 38. That would be the last filed goal of the afternoon for the Bison as Savannah State answered with a 10-0 run.

During the SSU run, Howard coach Kevin Nickelberry would get ejected with 2:34 left.

A pair of free throws by Brandon Ford got Howard (4-18, 1-7) within 50-42 with 54 seconds remaining but they would get no closer.

Preston Blackman was the only other SSU player in double figures with 11 points. Blackman also had five assists.

The game had eight ties and five lead changes.

With the score knotted at six, the Tigers scored eight straight points for a 14-6 advantage with 11:28 left in the first period.

Howard rallied back with a 14-4 run to take a 20-18 lead at the 3:40 mark.

Hassan made a layup with 3:31 left to tie the game at 20. He followed that with a dunk at the 1:31 mark to give SSU a 22-20 lead.

The teams were tied at 22 entering halftime as Phillips' made a layup 31 with seconds left.

Howard opened the second period with six consecutive points for a 28-22 lead with 18:15 left.

A 3-pointer by Hassan cut SSU's deficit in half but Howard regained their six point advantage with 15:07 remaining.

The Bison led by five but SSU was able to tied the game at 36 with 8:45 left on a Blackman 3-pointer.

Savannah State (12-9, 6-1) shot 45.2 percent from the field for the game.

Howard out-rebounded the Tigers 33 to 25 but only shot 31.1 percent from the floor.

Ford led the Bison with 13 points.
