Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Savannah State went the final 3:12 without a field goal but held on to defeat Florida A&M 67-65 in the Al Lawson Center before a crowd of 567.
The Tigers, who led by as many as 22 in the first period, withstood a second half FAMU rally that would get the Rattlers as close as 66-65 with 12 seconds remaining.
SSU's
Khiry White made a free throw with five seconds left which gave SSU a two-point edge.
FAMU trailed 48-27 with 16:13 left in the second half and got within 57-47 after a 3-pointer by Reggie Lewis with 8:10 on the clock.
SSU ( 14-10, 8-2) answered the Rattlers with a 3-pointer by Devin Williams but Lewis buried another three for the home team to make the score 60-50 with 7:31 remaining.
Lewis' 3-pointer started a 10-0 run that got the Rattlers within three with just under six minutes on the clock.
The Tigers final field goal of the evening came on a jumper by White at the 3:12 mark which put SSU ahead 64-58.
FAMU answered with a 7-2 mini-spurt to close within 66-65 with 12 seconds left after a 3-pointer by Muhammad Abdul-Aleem.
Preston Blackman led SSU with a game-high 20 points while
Rashad Hassan added 13 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
After shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the opening period, SSU dipped to only make 8 of 22 shots after halftime.
The Tigers made 7 of 14 shots from 3-point range with Blackman making four of his five attempts.
In the first half, the Rattlers held a slim 8-7 lead with 15:35 on the clock but SSU exploded with a 29-5 un to go ahead 36-14 with 4:17 left before intermission.
The Rattlers (6-19, 3-8) ended the period with a 7-2 run but Savannah State led at the break 38-21.
FAMU, who shot 60.7 percent from the field, was led by Jamie Adams who had 18 points.
