SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State women's tennis team opened the 2013 season with a 6-1 win over Albany State at the Tiger Tennis Courts Friday afternoon in Savannah.
Leading SSU in singles play at the number one position was junior
Sandra Kristjansdottir, who beat Reanah Kellogg in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. SSU Newcomer
Andrea Pavlovic beat Albany State's Shelby Ridley 6-1, and 6-1, playing in the number two spot.
Pavlovic, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia native, transferred to Savannah State this year from St. Bonaventure University.
Senior
Esmira Gheisary defeated Jasmine Livingston in straight sets (6-0, 6-0), while sophomore
Nicole Ashiedu downed Keyanna Russell 6-0, and 6-2.
In the fifth position, senior
Davita Washington beat Jessica Mann in straight sets 6-0, and 6-1. SSU freshman
Tiffany Williams fell in a tie-breaker to Nicolette Williams.
Tiffany Williams won the first set 6-3, but fell in the set, 4-6. Nicolette Williams captured the match, 10-3, in a tie-breaker.
In doubles competition, the Lady Tigers won outright, with the team of Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu leading the way with an 8-2 victory over Nicolette Williams and Kellogg, on the first court.
Playing in the second spot, Gheisary and Pavlovic defeated Livingston and Ridley 8-0. Washington and T. Williams sealed up the sweep with an 8-4 victory over the Albany State team of Mann and Russell.
The Lady Tigers return to the courts on February 5, with a visit to Presbyterian College in South Carolina. First serve is set for 3 p.m. SSU will return to Tiger Tennis Courts next month. They are set to play the University of Pittsburgh on March 13 at 10 a.m.
