Women’s Basketball Wins Big In Season Opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. -  Savannah State women's basketball used a balanced attack en route to an 88-41 win over Columbia College in their 2013-14 season opener in Tiger Arena Friday evening.

The Lady Tigers were led by newcomer Bria Dorsey who put up 16 points in the win. Kenyata Hendrix and Ezinne Kalu each had 13 points, while Rhianna Warren and Jerryshia Williams added eight apiece.

SSU outrebounded the Koalas 58-38 in the win and were led in rebounds by newcomer Tiyonda Davis who pulled down seven boards.

Jennifer Giles led Columbia College with 10 points, while Kennyatta Gilchrist had six rebounds.

The Lady Tigers opened with a 12-2 run in the first five minutes. Williams capped the run with a layup in the paint. SSU extended their lead to 24-11 on a layup from Hendrix with 8:26 to play in the first quarter.

Down the stretch, SSU continued to mount a massive lead, going up by 20 points, 38-18, with 2:44 to play in the half.
Davis sank a layup with 20 seconds left to lift SSU to a 45-21 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers maintained their commanding lead, going up by as much as 51 points on a layup from Chantrell Frazier.  Columbia College's Erica LeBlanc sealed up the final score on a good jump shot with 15 seconds to play.

SSU shot at a 50.6 percent clip from the field, hitting 39-of-77 attempts and 50 percent from the free-throw line. Columbia College went 22.2 percent from the field and 58.8 percent from the charity strip.

The Lady Tigers continue the 2013-14 campaign with a home contest against Charleston Southern on November 16. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
