Grand Canyon Edges Savannah State 72-71

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -  Savannah State fought back from a 14-point deficit in the second half but fell short in a 72-71 loss to Grand Canyon in the second day of action in the Global Sports Hoops Showcase played at the Huntsman Center.

The Tigers trailed 39-25 early in the second period but battled back to take a 42-41 lead with 14:07 left after a layup and free throw by Keierre Richards.

SSU led by as many as five, four times in the second half with the last being at the 4:37 mark after a free throw by Jeremiah Hill.

The Antelopes trimmed away at the Tigers (2-5) lead and a pair of free throws by Jerome Garrison knotted the contest at 67 with 1:36 remaining.

The teams traded baskets with Richards hitting a jumper for SSU followed by a 3-pointer by Grand Canyon's Garrison.

Deven Williams made a layup with 17 seconds remaining to give Savannah State a 71-70 advantage but Killiam Larson made two free throws for the Antelopes with two seconds on the clock that proved to be the game winner.

The Tigers, who fell to 0-5 away from Tiger Arena, were led by Williams' 19 points off the bench. Richards added 15 points while Joshua Montgomery scored 11 and Hill chipped in 10. Jyles Smith contributed 9 rebounds to go along with his six points and career-high 9 blocks.

As a team, SSU shot 62.1 percent from the floor in the second half and 47.4 percent for the game. The Tigers were out-rebounded 41 to 29.

In the first half with the contest tied at 16, Grand Canyon scored nine straight points for a 25-16 lead with 5:35 left.

SSU got as close as 29-25 with 2:13 remaining but Grand Canyon closed the period with five unanswered points for a 34-25 halftime lead.

The Antelopes (2-3) scored the first five points of the second half to build a 14-point cushion.

Grand Canyon shot 41.5 percent from the field and were led by Garrison's 19 points. Killian added 15 points and 17 rebounds.
