Arnold Louis scored 16 points and hauled down 19 rebounds to lead Savannah State to a 56-48 win over Coppin State in the CSU Physical Education Complex.
The Tigers trailed by as many as nine points in the first half and went into intermission down 25-18.
SSU opened the second period with a 17-2 run to go ahead 35-27 with 14:22 left in the game.
The Eagles battled back to close the gap to 39-37 after a layup by Andre Armstrong with 8:54 remaining.
Savannah State answered with a 3-pointer by
Preston Blackman followed by a layup and free throw by
Khiry White to extend their advantage to eight with 6:20 left.
On three more occasions, CSU would get as close as four points with the last being with 3:40 left after a Armstroing 3-pointer to make the score 48-44.
Following Armstrong's 3-pointer, Louis answered with a dunk and a layup to give SSU a 52-44 lead with 90 seconds remaining.
Blackman and
Rashad Hassan each added 10 points for the Tigers (7-9, 1-1).
Both teams shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the first period. The Tigers shot 42.9 percent in the second half while CSU shot 34.6 percent.
Coppin State (3-14, 0-2) jumped out to a 5-0 leads but SSU tied the score at nine after a 3-pointer by
Robert Burger with 11:02 on the clock.
With the score knotted at 16, the Eagles reeled off nine straight points for a 25-16 lead with 3:41 left.
SSU held Coppin State without any points the rest of the half but still trailed by seven at the break.
Michael Murray led CSU with 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Both squads made 21 turnovers.
