SSU Drops Two Games in USPTR Spring Tennis Fest

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers fell to Gardner-Webb University Monday, 7-0 and dropped a close match Tuesday against Siena College 5-2 in the 2012 USPTR Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

In a close match with Sienna College, the Lady Tigers forced two game changing tie-breakers. In doubles action, the team of Sandra Dis Kristjansdottir and Nicole Ashiedu forced a tie-breaker after knotting the score at 7 with the Lady Saints team of Jaasleen Sandhu and Carly Holloway. Siena won the tie with a 7-4 set win.

In singles action, Savannah State's Esmira Gheisery, playing in the number one court, forced a tie-breaker with Sandhu after a 7-7 tie. Sandhu squeezed out a 9-7 tie-breaking win to seal up the match.

Kristjansdottir, playing on the third court downed Siena's Brittany Filip 8-3. Davita Washington picked up her third match win, beating Lady Saint's Jennifer Galante 8-0.

In other doubles action, the Siena team of Nicole Ross, and Filip squeezed out an 8-6 win over Gheisery and Chandel McDonie. Washington and Shannon Howard fell by only two points, 8-4, to the team of Jessica Macaluso and Cassandra Braz.

Asheidu dropped her singles match on the second court to Carly Holloway, 8-3. McDonie fell to Ross in singles action 8-4 and Hilton dropped the fifth court to Macaluso, 8-0.

Monday, Kristjansdottir fell in the number one spot to Erica White, 6-2 and 6-1. Gheisery dropped her match in the second court to Alice Hopkins in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Ashiedu fell to Ioana Oprea 6-0 and 6-0. McDonie dropped a match in the fourth court to Jenny Lunde 6-2 and 6-1.

Hilton fell to Yasmin Doost in the fifth spot, 6-0 and 6-0. Tavenner Black beat Howard 6-0 and 6-0. In doubles action, the team of Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu fell to Oprea and Lunde, 8-1. In the second court Hopkins and Doost beat Gheisery and McDonie 8-1. Hilton and Washington fell 8-0 to the team of Whie and Ronia Hutterli.

The Lady Tigers head to Princess Anne, Maryland for two Mid-Eastern Conferences matches with Delaware State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, March 31st.
