SAVANNAH, Ga. – Hampton University shot 83.3 percent from the free-throw line, knocking down 25 of 30 attempts en route to a 70-40 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over the Savannah State Lady Tigers, Monday night in Tiger Arena.
SSU was 14-for-59 from the field (23.7%) in the loss.
Ezinne Kalu led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, followed by
Andrietta Thomas with eight. Charmaine Green led in rebounds with eight.
Savannah State falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Hampton improves to 6-3, and 2-0 in the MEAC.
The Lady Pirates opened the game with a 6-0 run, capped by two good free-throws from Keiara Avant, taking a 10-4 lead at the 15:34 mark. The Lady Tigers cut that lead to three points, 13-10, behind two good free-throws from Thomas with 12:47 remaining in the opening half.
The Lady Pirates extended a 25-11 lead at the 9:31 mark behind a 12-1 run sparked by two free-throws from Kenia Cole. Charmaine Green sank a point from the charity strip, and
Jazmin Thomas added a layup to cut the visitors lead to 11 with 6:41 to play.
With three minutes till the half, the Lady Pirates held a 14-point lead, 31-17. Good free-throws from Hampton's Olivia Allen, and Kalu gave the visitors a 32-18 advantage into the locker room. The Lady Pirates shot 48 percent from the floor in the opening half. SSU managed a 17.9 percent clip from the floor in the opening 20.
Hampton extended their lead to 17 out-of-the-gate behind a good 3-pointer from Cole. Back-to-back layups from Greene, and
Andrietta Thomas cut the visitors lead to 13, 35-33, with 17:44 to play.
At the 12:24 mark, Hampton extended that lead to 21 points behind an 8-0 run, taking a 43-22 advantage. Six of those points came from good free-throws.
A layup from Avant at the 5:36 point gave Hampton their largest lead of the game (33 points) at 61-28. The Lady Tigers continued to battle cutting the enormous lead to 26 points with 2:28 to play on a layup from
Jasmine Norman.
Avant added two good free-throws at the 1:16 mark for the last two points of the game. The game remained scoreless in the final minute as both teams committed a combined four turnovers. Norman put up a last minute 3-pointer that hit the rim as the goal lighted up.
Avant led Hampton with 22 points, followed by Allen with 18, and Cole with 13. The Lady Pirates outrebounded SSU 48-35.
The Lady Tiger return to action on December 10, in Tiger Arena, as they host the University of North Florida for a non-conference matchup. SSU returns to MEAC play on January 12 against Coppin State.
