Jacksonville, Fla. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers Tennis squad opened their season up Sunday with two losses to Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville University at Watson Family Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Florida.
Savannah State faced off with Florida Atlantic first, as sophomore Sandra Dis Kristjansdottir fell to Florida Atlantic's Justin Humair 6-0 and 6-1. Cassie Berrgeson beat Savannah State junior Esmira Gheisary in two sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
Lady Tiger freshman Nicole Ashiedu, senior Shannon Howard, sophomore's Chandel McDonie and Ge'Anne Hilton all fell in straight sets, setting the final score at Florida Atlantic 6, Savannah State 0.
Doubles were canceled due to threatening weather in the Florida Atlantic match.
However, the Lady Tigers saw some doubles action in their second match of the day as they took on the Jacksonville University Lady Dolphins.
The doubles team of Kristjansdottir and Ashiedu fell to the team of Aline Staudt and Natalia Marques Melibeu, 8-3. Gabriela Scaff Haddad Bartos and Djessika Bezerra beat Savannah State's Gheisary and McDonie, 8-1 to add the extra point for Jacksonville. The team of Hilton and Howard fell to Virginia Iwinski and Veronique Spencer in the last doubles match, 8-1.
In singles play, Kristjansdottir fell 6-0 and 6-2 to Staudt, while Gheisery dropped two to MeliBeu, 6-1 and 6-1. Bezerra beat Ashiedu 6-1 and 6-1. Bartos beat McDonie, 6-0 and 6-1. Hilton fell to Iwinkse, 6-0 and 6-0 while Davita Washington dropped two straight to Spenser, 6-0 and 6-0. The Lady Dolphins claimed a 7-0 rout of Savannah State in the final score.
The Lady Tigers will host North Carolina A&T Sunday, January 29th at Tiger Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
