SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball ended the 2010-11 season on a winning note as they defeated Allen 86-32 in Tiger Arena.
SSU ends the year with a 15-11 record, the program's first winning season since 1998-99.
It was also the last game in a Lady Tiger uniform for seniors
Courtney Long and
Brittany Cade.
With the game tied at nine, SSU scored 11 unanswered points for a 20-9 lead with 8:36 on the clock.
A layup by Deveney Guillory got the Yellow Jackets within nine but Savannah State out-scored Allen 17-5 the remaining 7:35 to take a 37-16 lead into halftime.
SSU scored the first eight points of the second half as part of a 14-2 run to go ahead 51-18 with 14:19 remaining.
Allen got as close as 29 with just over 12 minutes left but not any closer as the Lady Tigers reeled off 15 straight points to take a 77-26 lead with 4:27 on the clock.
SSU shot 58.2 percent for the game from the floor but only 35.3 percent from the free throw line.
Allen (4-23) shot only 22.2 percent from the field and made 31 turnovers.
All ten Savannah State players scored and were led by
Ezinne Kalu's 22 points, 9 assists and 5 steals.
Kirkland added a career-high 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Long ended her career with 7 points, 6 assists and 4 steals while Cade had 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Jacena Thompson had 10 rebounds for Allen.
