Tigers Win In Overtime

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx.- Stephen Wilson came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points as Savannah State won their 4th game in a row with a 63-57 overtime win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the American Bank Center.

Wilson shot 4 of 6 from the field and made 7 of 9 free throws in 17 minutes of action.

Preston Blackmon also scored 16 points while Jovonni Shuler added 12 points.

SSU trailed by five with 31 seconds left in regulation but a layup by Jyles Smith with 20 seconds remaining and a 3-pointer by Blackmon with six seconds left tied the game at 54 and sent it into a extra period.

In the extra frame, Hollis Hill made a 3-pointer to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 57-54 lead, but the Islanders didn't score again. Savannah State answered with a free throw by Wilson and back to back 3-pointers by Shuler and Joshua Montgomery. Wilson added two more free throws with 30 seconds left to close out the scoring in the contest.

SSU, who trailed by 12 points with 10 minutes left in the second half, improved to 6-17.

The Islanders (8-17) led 23-18 at the half as they held Savannah State to shoot 25.9 percent from the floor.

Corpus Christi shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and built a 12 point advantage with 16:17 remaining.

SSU sliced their deficit to eight before the Islanders took a 44-32 lead with10:19 on the clock.

The Tigers closed within one with 7:14 remaining but Corpus Christi went up by five with 2:13 on the clock.

Savannah State finished the half with a 7-2 spurt to send the game into overtime.

Justin Reynolds had 19 points and 15 boards for the Islanders.

SSU was out-rebounded 42 to 35.
