NORFOLK, Va.- Brandon Wheeless hit a 3-pointer with one second left to lift Norfolk State to a 60-58 win over Savannah State.
The crowd of 766 in Echols Hall saw the Spartans lead by six with 3:53 remaining but SSU rallied with seven straight points to take a 58-57 lead with 17 seconds left on a pair of free throws by
Jyles Smith.
Norfolk State got the ball and Wheeless hit the 3-pointer to end the game and give the Spartans a 5-3 record.
Trailing by one early in the second half, NSU put together a 9-0 run to take a 45-37 lead with 13:51 left. It was the Spartans biggest lead of the contest.
SSU closed their deficit to 45-44 but another spurt by the Spartans gave them a six point lead.
Savannah State, who shot 40.4 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Spartans 33 to 25, were led by
Rashad Hassan's 17 points.
Joshua Montgomery came off the bench to score 11 points while
Cedric Smith had 10 rebounds and Preston Blackmon chipped in eight points and eight assists.
Norfolk State shot 60 percent from the field in the second period. Kyle O'Quinn had 17 points and 10 rebounds for NSU.
SSU (3-6) led most of the first period until the Spartans reeled off a 11-2 run to go ahead 22-16 with 7:33 on the clock.
Down 24-18, SSU out-scored the Spartans 10-1 to go ahead 28-25 only to have NSU rally to tie the game at 28 with 2:02 left.
A 3-pointer by Montgomery gave SSU a 31-29 edge with 1:48 left but the first half ended with Wheeless burying a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to send Norfolk State into the half with a 32-31 lead.
