SSU Opens Season With Win Over Paine

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State women's basketball team gave athletics director Sterling Steward, Jr. a good birthday present with a season opening 55-38 win over Paine.
 
The crowd of 901 at Tiger Arena saw the SSU defense limit the Lions to shoot 20.8 percent from the floor and make 30 turnovers.
 
Savannah State jumped out to a 5-0 lead but Paine battled back to tie the game at 11 with 7:15 left in the first half.
 
Clinging to a 14-13 lead with 5:12 remaining, the Lady Tigers went on a 12-3 run to go ahead 26-16 with just over two minutes remaining.
 
Paine scored the final four points of the opening half to go into intermission trailing 26-20.
 
The Lions sliced their deficit to 28-23 with 16:47 left in the period after a 3-pointer by Quandra Rogers but SSU answered with two free throws by Ezzine Kalu, a layup by Jasmine Kirkland and a jumper by Uba Blessing to extend their lead to 34-23 with 15;04 remaining.
 
Leading 35-25, the Lady Tigers ran off 11 straight points to build a 46-25 cushion with 7:30 left.
 
SSU lead ballooned to 24 points (53-29) with 1:26 remaining after a free throw by Paige Johnson.
 
Paine shot 4 of 26 from the floor in the second half.
 
Kalu led all scorers with 21 points and four assists. Alisha Nelson had 14 rebounds for SSU (1-0) and three blocks.
 
Savannah State had 55 rebounds while PC grabbed 39.
 
Ariel Brown led Paine (0-2) with 10 points. Brown is a Savannah native and the daughter of former SSU golfer Morris Brown.
 
Paine head coach Willie Adams is the son of Theresa Adams, who played basketball and softball at Savannah State under former coach Jimmie Westley.
