Tigers Fall To Hampton In Homecoming Game

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Hampton scored 19 unanswered points as the Pirates defeated Savannah State 22-5 at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.
 
The loss spoiled SSU's Homecoming festivities which drew 10,375 fans.
 
Hampton trailed 5-3 at the half but tied the game with 1:35 left in the third quarter when DeVonte Hawkins tackled SSU quarterback Antonio Bostick in the endzone for a saftey.
 
The Pirates took the lead for good with 10 seconds remaining in the third when Taurean Durham kicked a 29 yard field goal for a 8-5 advantage.
 
Travis Champion threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Reginald Hicks with 11:11 left in the fourth quarter and Antwon Chisolm scored on a 46 yard run with 4:53 on the clock to close out the scoring.
 
The loss dropped Savannah State to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference while HU improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC.
 
Hampton scored on their first possession of the afternoon as Durham kicked a 34 yard field goal with 10:08 left in the first quarter to complete a 15 play, 56 yard drive.
 
Savannah State gained 45 yards on their first drive but a 35 yard punt by Derek Williams pinned the Pirates on their own one yard line. That led to Nate Clay sacking Chisolm in the endzone for a safety with 4:36 left in the opening quarter.
 
Hampton led 3-2.
 
With four seconds remaining before halftime, Williams booted a 22 yard field goal to send the Tigers into the lockerroom with a 5-3 edge. During the drive Bostick completed 3 of 4 passes and rushed twice for 12 yards.
 
The contest was married with penalties.
 
Hampton was flagged 14 times for 156 yards and SSU was caled for 11 penalties for 93 yards.
 
Bostick passed for 70 yards while rushing for 44 for the Tigers. Justin Babb ran for 32 yards. Kris Drummond and Dylan Cook each caught 2 passes for 19 yards while Alakan Thomas caught 2 passes for 15 yards. Defensively, Clay had 16 tackles, Sadrak JeanBaptise had 14 tackles while Chris asbury was in on 13 stops.
 
Hawkins paced the Pirates defense with 13 tackles. Chisholm ran for 80 yards abd a touchdown while Champion passed for 197 yards and a touchdown and Hickes caught 8 passes for 79 yards and a score.
