SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State received strong pitching performances from freshmen
Madison Hedderly and
Cassie Standard in a double-header sweep over Winston-Salem State at the Paulson Complex.
Hedderly struck out 11 batters in a 3-2 win in the first game while Standard stuck out six in a 4-1 victory in game two.
In the first game, the contest was scoreless until the top of the eighth when WSSU's Kayla Woodbury hit a two-run home run. SSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning as
Shannon Reno hit a two-run double that scored
Crystal Williams and
Jessica Weimerskirk and
Jennifer Katzman singled home
Alexis Carson with the game winning run.
Reno, Katzman and
Amber Wright had the only three hits for SSU.
Woodbury had two hits and two RBIs for the Rams. Brittany Lane took the loss as she struck out nine batters and only gave up three hits.
In the second game, Savannah State scored three runs off one hit in the second inning to take the early lead. Hedderly led off the fifth with a double and came home on a single by
Brittney Lollis for a 4-0 edge.
WSSU broke up the shutout in the sixth when Woodbury scored after Brittney Cato drew a bases loaded walk.
Hedderly had a pair of hits for the Lady Tigers (14-15).
Tiffany Burgess struck out five in a losing effort for WSSU (3-12).
