MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Savannah State picked up their first road win of the season with a 57-45 victory over Alabama State.
The crowd of 647 in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome saw SSU improve to 4-5 while the Hornets fell to 1-6.
Ezinne Kalu led the way for Savannah State with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Courtney Long added 18 points and four steals while Darice Fountaine grabbed 10 rebounds.
SSU opened the first half with a 20-7 lead before Alabama State rallied with a 12-2 run cut their deficit to 24-19 with 4:05 left in the half.
Savannah State, who shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 3 for 6 from 3-point range in the first period, led 28-21 at the break.
The Lady Tigers went cold in the second half, shooting 25 percent from the floor and going the final 8:14 without a field goal.
SSU led by 17 early in the second half but with 8:43 remaining Alabama State trailed 42-33.
ASU never got any closer as Savannah State maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
SSU hit 13 of 14 free throw attempts the final 7:44 of the contest.
Alabama State out-rebounded SSU 43 to 39 but made 25 turnovers and only made 1 of 13 free throw attempts.
Tanika Jackson had 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Hornets.
