Tigers Hold Off NCCU For First Win

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Antonio Bostick and A. J. DeFilippis combined to throw for 121 yards and three touchdowns to lead Savannah State to their first win of the season, a 28-21 victory over North Carolina Central.

The crowd of 3,518 at Memorial Stadium saw the Tigers break a 10-game losing streak that dated back to the 2009 season and improve to 1-9.

The win was also the first for interim head coach Julius Dixon.

North Carolina Central, which was penalized 12 times for 118 yards, fell to 3-7.

The Eagles missed a 33-yard field goal attempt on their fiirts possession but drove 80 yards in 4 plays on their next series as Tim Shankle scored on a 3-yard run with 6:56 left in the first quarter. Frankie Cardelle kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

SSU tied the game at 7 late in the quarter as they marched 45 yards in 3 plays as Bostick threw a 28 yard scoring pass to Jaquan Trammell with 1:04 on the clock. Derek Williams was successful on the extra point kick. The key play on the drive was a 12 yard reception by Trammell.

On their first series of the second quarter, SSU took a 14-7 lead with AJ DeFilippis threw a 18-yard touchdown pass to Alakan Thomas with 7:31 left. Key play son the 10 play, 83 yard drive were a 10 yard run by Bostick and a 12 yard run by Sheldon Barnes.

Following a interception and a 37 yard return by Richie Rucker, SSU took over on the Eagles 37. From there it took Savannah State two plays to score as Bostick threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Simon Heyward with 6:32 remaining for a 21-7 advantage. The key play was a 21 yard run by Barnes.

NCCU fumbled the kickoff and it was recovered by the Tigers' Michael Kuku at the Eagles 27.

Savannah State needed five plays to take a 28-7 lead as Barnes scored on a one yard run with 4:03 on the clock. A 12 yard pass play from DeFilippis to Heyward was the key play on the drive.

On their next possession, the Eagles drove 69 yards in 10 plays to pull within 28-14 with 33 seconds on the clock as Michael Johnson threw a 5 yard touchdown pass to Justin Manning.

NCCU got within a touchdown on their first drive of the second half as Johnson threw a 18 yard scoring pass to Corey Harris with 3:55 on the clock.

The Eagles drove to the SSU 19 but fumbled and it was recovered by the Tigers' Broderick Sellers with just over 14 minutes left in the contest.

The next NCCU drive ended before it got started as Arthur Goforth fumbled a Derek Williams punt at his own 37 and it was recovered by SSU's Matthew Smith at the 40.

SSU fumbled the ball deep in their own territory and the Eagles recovered at the SSU 11. NCCU lost yards on two consecutive running plays and then threw back-to-back incomplete passes and turned the ball over on downs with just over four minutes left.

The Eagles were able to dive to the SSU 24 on their last possession but turned the ball over on downs as a fourth down pass in the end zone was incomplete with 45 seconds left.

Barnes ran for a career-high 120 yards on 19 carries for SSU. Bostick, who ran for 49 yards, passed for 78 and two touchdowns while DeFilippis was 6 for 6 with 43 yards and a touchdown. Heyward hauled in 6 receptions for 46 yards and a score. Kuku had 10 tackles for the defense.

Johnson passed for 196 yards for NCCU while Tony McCord ran for 67 and Geovonie Irvine caught 9 passes for 138 yards. Three different Eagles had seven tackles.

NCCU had 401 yards of offense while the Tigers had 273.
